Madurai is one of the ancient city in India and that is having the history of more than 2500 years. The people of Madurai had even trade with Greece, Rome 2000 years ago. Megasthanes had visited Madurai as early as 3rd Century BC. Madurai was ruled by Pandiyas, Chozhas, Sultans, Tuglaks, Nayaks and later on it was in the hands of British People. After Indepence its become an integral part of Republic India. Mahatma Gandhi had visited Madurai thrice before the independence of India.
Now, the city is looking so beautiful where you can see mixture of both ancient and modern culture. The city is known for some beautiful temples and that's why it is also called as "Temple City". The city is also referred with names like "Athens of the East", "Koodal Managar", "Thoonga Nagar", etc. The city is famous for its culture and beautiful Jasmine. Tamil is the mother tongue for people of Madurai. Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, Mariamman Temple, Gandhi Museum, Alagar Kovil, Thirupparankundram, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal are some beautiful locations where you must watch out.
A great place in Madurai. Madurai is the oldest and Second Largest City in Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the bank of the river Vaigai. Madurai is the birth place of ‘Tamil’, which is one of the oldest languages in the world. It is a pilgrimage centre and a gateway to south Tamilnadu. It has the world famous Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple at its core. The city has grown on both sides of the river Vaigai.
